Verbum vitae

Numquid oblivisci potest mulier infantem suum,
ut non misereatur filio uteri sui ?
Etsi illa oblita fuerit,
ego tamen non obliviscar tui.

Can a mother forget her infant,
be without tenderness for the child of her womb?
Even should she forget,
I will never forget you.

Czyż może niewiasta zapomnieć o swym niemowlęciu,
ta, która kocha syna swego łona?
A nawet, gdyby ona zapomniała,
Ja nie zapomnę o tobie.

Et ducam eos per ignem,
et uram eos sicut uritur argentum,
et probabo eos sicut probatur aurum.
Ipse vocabit nomen meum, et ego exaudiam eum.
Dicam : Populus meus es,
et ipse dicet : Dominus Deus meus.

I will bring the one third through fire,
and I will refine them as silver is refined,
and I will test them as gold is tested.

I will say, “They are my people,”

For I know my offense;
my sin is always before me.
Against you alone have I sinned;
I have done such evil in your sight.
That you are just in your sentence,
blameless when you condemn.

Uznaję bowiem moją nieprawość,
a grzech mój jest zawsze przede mną.
Tylko przeciw Tobie zgrzeszyłem
i uczyniłem, co złe jest przed Tobą,

i prawym w swoim osądzie.

Ecce dies veniunt, dicet Dominus,
et mittam famem in terram :
non famem panis, neque sitim aquae,
sed audiendi verbum Domini.

Yes, days are coming,
says the Lord God,
when I will send famine upon the land:
Not a famine of bread, or thirst for water,
but for hearing the word of the Lord.

Oto nadejdą dni -
wyrocznia Pana Boga -
gdy ześlę głód na ziemię,
nie głód chleba ani pragnienie wody,
lecz głód słuchania słów Pańskich.

Prior omnium creata est sapientia,
et intellectus prudentiae ab aevo.

Before all things else wisdom was created;
and prudent understanding, from eternity.

Jako pierwsza przed wszystkim stworzona została mądrość,
rozum roztropności od wieków.

Beatus homo qui invenit sapientiam,
et qui affluit prudentia.
Melior est acquisitio eius negotiatione argenti,
et auri primi et purissimi fructus eius.
Pretiosior est cunctis opibus,
et omnia quae desiderantur huic non valent comparari.

Happy the man who finds wisdom,
the man who gains understanding!
For her profit is better than profit in silver,
and better than gold is her revenue;
She is more precious than corals,
and none of your choice possessions can compare with her.

Szczęśliwy, kto mądrość osiągnął,
mąż, który nabył rozwagi:
bo lepiej ją posiąść niż srebro,
ją raczej nabyć niż złoto,
zdobycie jej lepsze od pereł,
nie równe jej żadne klejnoty.

Et omnia pergunt ad unum locum.
De terra facta sunt,
et in terram pariter revertuntur.

Both go to the same place;
both were made from the dust,
and to the dust they both return.

Wszystko idzie na jedno miejsce:
powstało wszystko z prochu
i wszystko do prochu znów wraca.
